Hey there, Name's here. So, the title is a bit long sry but that is exactly what I'm going to talk about.
Before uploading anything to migdal, I think you have to make sure if it's complete.
And because of that, I had to reset my explanation... how many times? About three times. That's quite a lot.
So, to not make mistakes like me, you should make sure the language is finished or not.
But if you are going to upload something that just reports your progress or something that came up to your mind as a new concept, then I think the thing doesn't have to be solidized.
How exactly can I test my language then?
I said it easily there but how do you check if it's complete (btw I say complete here mean the grammar is solidized, not like all vocabs were made)? I mean it's not really clear whether you missed something or not, right?
The first way is to go search syntax test or conlang test and test your grammar. But, this isn't perfectly good, since they're examples are in English and sometimes you use different wording or concept to express same thing, or you just leave some part of grammar out intentionally to make it unique (the opposite would be your language is so precise that even using those tests you still miss some key grammar which you wanted to add but forgot).
The second way is to just introduce the language to your favorite AI and ask if there's any inconsistency in your language. And again, this is also not really good since it AI, and I've tried that and this time testing on Petankian, it kinda worked, but they still missed some of the grammars. But they are like customizable to your concept so it's half better and half worse than syntax test.
The third way is... yk, the traditional kind of way and the most tidious way, to make a tons of (I mean A TONS Of) sentences and phrases to make sure your language is complete. It's really time consuming but it's the most reliable way to check. You already knew I'll introduce this didn't you?
Actually applying these methods
Anyways, I think we need some example. I couldn't really come up with new thing to introduce in my conlang Petankian, so I searched up for conlang test (btw I did every test on Petankian), and I just picked the first one, which is this website.
I started translating and even before reaching 10 sentences, I got into a trouble.
- The sun shines. --> Zon csvajte.
- The sun is shining. --> Zon csvajte.
- The sun shone. --> Zon jecte csvajtal. / Zon csvajtal.
- The sun will shine. --> Zon irime csvajtal.
- The sun has been shining. --> Zon jecte csvajtal. / Zon csvajtal.
So, take a look at 1,2 and 3,5. Unlike English which is the language of the test, Petankian doesn't have present continuous and present perfect continuous (it only has present, past and future).
Well, you might think: "Then, just skip it. That's no big deal. It's just in your language, you don't need to express in that way." But think if it was opposite. What do I mean by opposite? The relationship between the language of teaser and the language you want to test.
This time, the language I wanted to test was simplar than the language of teaser (in terms of tenses, if you consider phonology and cases then Petankian is horribly complex), but if the language I wanted to test was complicated than the language of teaser, then I can't test the language fully, since the teaser language doesn't even have way to test that.
You get the disadvantage of using syntax teaser? It's still good tho. You should at least try.
Ok, next, I went meet AI and said to check my language and tell me if there's anything missing to complete the concept of the language.
I did few tests, and they said: "Yup. Your conlang is finished."
And to that, I immediately respond: "What? You didn't even covered all of grammars nor what's missing!?"
Yeah. Literally, they just checked how accusative and verb conjugation works and literally said it's finished when they clearly didn't even check a surface of the iceburg.
Couple discussions with AI, they decided to give me some sentences to translate (which were customized to the language's concept so that's a point for AI), and yeah the language was finished as they said. I think they covered all of the grammar with those sentences. Maybe inteviewing part was just to prepare for the translation and figure out whether my responce was inconsistent or not.
Yeah I would say this one is pretty good method.
*I after realized they still missed the expression for "let's do something".
And the last but not least, the brute force method.
So for that.... How can I explain what I did here?
Uhh, so, I am currently (in progress) making an article in Petankian, and so far, there's no big issues with it.
It also provides you new vocabs to make so it's good? I mean it's time consuming but I don't know if you agree with it cancells the time consuming disadvantage since you can make progress to the language by making new vocabs.
Idk. I think I wrote all what I wanted.
